The Queensland Museum at South Bank is free and chronically underestimated by visitors who go straight to GOMA next door. The natural history collection is genuinely excellent — a full blue whale skeleton, the state's dinosaur fossils, a serious marine biology section covering the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem. Spend time in the Cobb+Co carriage hall. The museum is also air-conditioned to a degree that counts as a meteorological event during Brisbane summers, which the locals understand perfectly well. The Gallery of Modern Art runs its most ambitious temporary exhibitions during the cooler months, when Brisbanites are happy to be indoors for longer than twenty minutes. The Queensland Art Gallery — QAG, the older sibling to GOMA next door — has one of the finest collections of Australian colonial and early twentieth-century painting in the country, and almost nobody talks about it because GOMA gets all the attention. The waterhouse of the building itself is exceptional: designed in 1982 with an internal water mall, a long lily-pond running through the centre of the ground floor. Free entry for the permanent collection. Go on a weekday when the school groups aren't in. Evening gallery hours let you appreciate the water mall's subtle interplay with lamplight.
